One step bigger, one step bolder!
Beavers are our adventurous 6 to 8-year-olds and the next step up after Squirrels. At 74th Coventry Scout Group, the Beaver Colony is where young people start to stretch their independence, explore the outdoors, and grow their confidence—all while having loads of fun with their friends.
What do Beavers get up to?
At Beavers, every week is a new adventure! From building bug hotels and toasting marshmallows to learning simple first aid or earning their very first badges, Beavers love:
- Playing games and solving challenges
- Learning skills for life in a fun, hands-on way
- Going on trips and exploring the world around them
- Taking part in camps and sleepovers with friends
- Helping their community and working as a team
Whether we're planting trees, building dens, or creating crafts, Beavers are always learning through doing.
What age can my child join Beavers?
Beavers is for young people aged 6 to 8 years old. Once they turn 8, they'll have the opportunity to move up to Cubs.
Does my child have to start in Squirrels first?
No. While many Beavers move up from Squirrels (ages 4–6), it's perfectly fine to join Beavers without any previous Scouting experience.
When and where do Beavers meet?
Beavers meet every Tuesday from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Twin Oaks Scout Centre, in Whitley, Coventry.
How much does it cost to join?
We charge £3.50 a week, charged monthly by Direct Debit to help cover running costs, materials, and activities. We aim to keep costs low, and financial support is available if needed—just speak to a leader.
Can parents stay and watch?
While Beavers is designed to encourage independence, we welcome parent helpers—especially on a rota or for special events. Let us know if you'd like to get involved.
Will my child go camping?
Yes—Beavers often experience their first nights away during sleepovers or weekend camps. These are carefully planned and supervised to be fun, safe, and age-appropriate.
How does my child earn badges?
Beavers earn badges by taking part in activities, learning new skills, and working as a team. Badges can also be earned at home with family—just ask your leader how to get involved!
Beaver Badges
Big achievements start small.
At Beavers, badges are more than just patches on a jumper—they’re proud reminders of every challenge tried, every skill learned, and every moment of teamwork. Whether it’s building a bug hotel, learning to tie a knot, or helping out at home, every badge tells a story of growth and adventure.
What kind of badges can Beavers earn?
Beaver Scouts can work toward three types of badges:
- Activity Badges – These cover everything from camping and cooking to animal care, cycling, and even digital skills. They’re all about exploring personal interests and building new talents.
- Challenge Awards – These are a bit bigger and take longer to earn. Beavers work on themes like teamwork, outdoor skills, world issues, and personal development. Collect them all and they’ll be well on their way to the highest Beaver achievement…
- Chief Scout’s Bronze Award – This is the top award in Beavers, earned by completing all six Challenge Awards and a selection of Activity Badges. It’s a brilliant milestone to aim for before moving up to Cubs.
How are badges awarded?
Badges are earned by getting stuck in, giving things a go, and doing your best. Leaders keep track of progress during meetings, and sometimes Beavers can work on badge activities at home with family too. When they complete a badge, they’ll be presented it during a celebration at the end of a session—usually with a big round of applause!
